Congrats to our president, Diep Vuong, on winning the The Henley & Partners Global Citizen Award!
From Diep, “Human trafficking is the major issue of our time, representing the ugly side of globalization. It is all-pervasive and yet largely ignored. It means a great deal to my team and me to have this acknowledgement from a global firm such as Henley & Partners, and we hope that this year’s award will help drive widespread awareness about the work that we are doing on the ground with our partners. The more we recognize the painful realities of our world, the more effective we can be in addressing and correcting them. Human trafficking has become a global epidemic, yet the people who abhor it and want it to end far outnumber those perpetuating it. Let us find each other and work together to turn the tide.”
The Issue: Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is a growing $150 billion a year business, enslaving over 40 million women, children and men in forced sexual and forced labor exploitation (ILO 2017).
The chance of becoming enslaved in the Asia Pacific region is twice as high compared to developed countries (ILO 2012).
Vietnam is a source country for cross-border sex and labor trafficking.
Human Trafficking in Vietnam: Who is Involved?
- 60% of all traffickers arrested in Vietnam are former victims
To Asia
- 79% of victims trafficked in Asia are women & girls
- 12-14, is the average age sold into sex slavery
To the UK
- 65% of victims trafficked to Europe are men & boys
- There are 3,000 potential child trafficking victims in the UK
The Solution
Pacific Links Foundation breaks the cycle of human trafficking by investing in at-risk populations to prevent trafficking before it starts & in survivors to build a new life.
Our programs address one or more of the five root factors that influence trafficking: Gender, Educational level, Identity, Economic situation, Law enforcement. We lead counter-trafficking efforts at the frontiers of Vietnam by providing the most vulnerable populations with access to education, shelter and reintegration services, and enabling new economic opportunities; targeting populations most at-risk of being trafficked. Our beneficiaries include at-risk youth especially young women and girls, factory workers, trafficking survivors, and their families and communities.
Since 2005, our innovative counter-trafficking initiatives have served 60,000+ women, men and children.
