ADAPT is currently seeking funding to purchase 200 new Vietnamese bicycles (about $50 apiece) for the students in our scholarship and vocational training programs. The need for these bikes is very real and important. Some of ADAPT-SPELL students have to walk almost three kilometers one way to reach school, a tremendous hardship as many already have to do household chores or work to earn supplementary income. As ADAPT scholarship provides private tutoring at the schools for these girls, those without bikes would have to make the decision between walking home to eat lunch and skipping the much-needed tutoring sessions altogether.

Your donations will help lessen the burden on these young girls, ultimately bringing them one step closer to high school graduation. Living in one of the most remote and inaccessible regions in Viet Nam, these girls are often overlooked. We are extremely happy to report that ADAPT has already identified a generous donor who will match your donation for the first 50 bikes. So for every bike you donate, ADAPT can provide two bikes to our needy recipients. Clearly, not everyone would need a bicycle and not everyone will get a bicycle.

UPDATE  - March 2007

As of today, we are happy to report that Lily's challenge to reach 200 bikes has met with great success!  Within six months, ADAPT has delivered more than 185 bicycles to our scholarship recipients and vocational trainees.  Our First Special Appeal has been heard.  We deeply thank you for reaching out through us to these young women who deserve a better opportunity at normal and productive life.  As we continue to reach out to more and more recipients, the need for bicycles remains real and will become part of the ADAPT assistance to our vulnerable population.  We look forward to your joining us at our next challenge!
